Last year I've found out about ReSkin. Someone told me that ReSkin could be of great use for me. An extra sponsor is always welcome. As always, I was a little sceptical about the patches. From the first time I saw them, I was already sure they would protect against friction, but the surface seemed too small for the seating position of ultracyclists like me. I've found a quick solution for this problem. The only thing I had to do was using 3 patches on my buttocks. And this worked! But you have to be honest: a couple of hundred kilometers is something different than a couple of thousand. Even the 500 kilometer trainings went perfectly thanks to the ReSkin patches. In the past I've tried everything to protect myself against blisters and friction.
During the RAAM of 2004, my buttocks had a lot to suffer. Thanks to the excellent care of my team, I've finished this race, even with huge blisters, but I've suffered a lot. After the race, I've seen some pictures of one of my colleagues, and he had the same wounds. The problem was that his wounds were infected, and since then, he's incapable of riding long distances and subsequently had to stop with Ultracycling.
The first big test was the 4200km-long "Tour Ultime" of 2007. Before the start of the race, I've applied them, and I used them for a week. The only thing I did extra was powdering my shammy. Althoug there were some little folds in my patches, my buttocks looked and felt good in the end, but it became clear I needed a bigger patch.
I've talked with the ReSkin manager about it and after a couple of weeks they came up with a new and bigger form.
Then the idea came to organize a 10000km race round my hometown, to get the people to tknow what ultracycling really is. This would become the first test of the new ReSkin form. Riding 10000km demands a lot from your buttocks, certainly if the road is bumpy like the roads in my village.
Of course we applied some patches on my feet as a prevention. At such distances, burning feet is something that can happen.
I took the patches off before going to sleep for a couple of hours each night, and I put it back on after the morning shower. I've repeated this ritual, until the ReSkin guys told me to put a patch on before going to sleep. And, remarkably, my buttocks regained form more quickly.
I've also tried to put a patch on a blister on my hand, and after a couple of days the blister had healed. Of course everybody wanted to know how my buttocks stayed in shape and why I didn't have saddle soreness. They couldn't understand I didn't have any pain. Of course my buttocks were tired after 10000km, but that was it.
After the ride, I took a warm shower and put a ReSkin on. I can honestly say that ReSkin works on every part of the body where there is friction.
